Project 3
Project 3: Exercise Program Evaluation: TaeKwonDo
Target Market
The target market for TaeKwonDo is from about 4 years old to 40 years old. However, TaeKwonDo can really be for anybody. It is a good sport because it is something that you can do your entire life, no matter what age you are, to stay healthy and active. I have seen two year-olds do it and I have seen eighty year-olds take classes. So it really is for everyone, any age, male or female.
Goals for Participants
The goal of TaeKwonDo (and any martial art) really depends on the person and what it is they are trying to improve. Some of the most common things you hear are to stay in shape, to learn self-defense, self-discipline, increase focus and self esteem, and to control anger. These are just a few of the goals that TaeKwonDo can help you achieve.
Progression of TaeKwonDo
The progression of TKD is tracked by a belt ranking system. At the beginning, you have the opportunity to test for a higher belt at a testing. Each time you test and move up in rank, the things you learn start to get a little more difficult and advanced. You begin learning new and exciting things every time you test.
Exercise Adherence
This ties in with the progression that I just talked about. Because of the belt system, people tend to want to stick with TKD because they want to get a new and higher level of belt. They will really want to stay in it at least until they get their black belt so they can say that they are a blackbelt.
Risk of Injury
As with any sport, there will be a risk of getting injured. However, it is a sport where beginners are welcome, so you can move at your own pace both while doing things in class and testing when you feel like you are ready. The risk of injury might be slightly high, but if the instructor makes sure that you are doing everything correctly, then you should be at a much smaller risk for injury.
Burnout
Sometimes, people burn out of doing TKD because they think it takes too long. Some people want to get their blackbelt that day. Others want their child to behave better overnight. Some people cannot wait on anything and want immediate results, which will not happen. Things like that take time, and it is something that can't be rushed. Other people may just get bored, which is what happens with a lot of sports. TKD tries to prevent that by mixing other things in with it to be sure that you are always learning something new.
